The Ghana Revenue Authority has closed down China Mall branches on the Spintex road and Ashaiman for not complying to the Authority’s directive to fix an electronic VAT system.

Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) statutorily oversees revenue generation In the country and has several instruments that are used In the collection of taxes from businesses and individuals.
The VAT system Is a major instrument used In this exercise and failure to pay taxes Is a gross violation of the laws of the Authority.

The enforcement team locked up the Chinese retail shop, and its warehouses on the Spintex Road and Ashaiman in Accra.

The closure of the mall, is in response to the inability of the company to fix their tax electronic collection system to enable the GRA access the data regarding VAT.

The Electronic VAT system was introduced on October 1, 2022 to block leakages in revenue collection and to ascertain the actual income of firms by the Authority.

“This is just for them to fix their system for the electronic VAT. We have engaged them on several occasions to get this simple system fixed. The place shall be sealed and locked until they comply with the law. This is part of the Enforcement exercise which we are doing at all the China Mall branches.” Accra Area Enforcement Manager, Joseph Annan said, speaking on Joy Business.

Chinese nationals have been in the news for the wrong reasons specifically galamsey, new development on tax evasion by China Mall only adds to the negative activities of ‘Chinese’ in Ghana as Ghanaians fume on this developing story.
