The Central Bank of the country has upgraded the one Ghana Cedi coin with new security features.
The Bank of Ghana in a press release disclosed this to the general public on Tuesday December 6, 2022.
The upgraded coin is expected to be in circulation beginning Monday (12th December, 2022) and will gradually replace the existing coin.
The new coin is believed to possess similar features as the existing coin but added ‘security’ features as the reason behind the upgrade suggests, is to help eradicate circulation of counterfeit coins.
Features of the Upgraded Coin
- The coin is similar to the existing GHC1 coin in shape, form and images; the Coat of Arms in front and the Scale of Justice at the back.
- The upgraded GHC1 coin is bi-metallic with an outer gold and inner silver.
- The coin has a pronounced rough edge and incorporates a latent image, which appears in a rectangular form below the Scale of Justice at the back.
- The latent image changes from a radiating star to a One Ghana cedi symbol sandwiched between two stars when tilted.
- The existing and the upgraded GHC1 coins will co-circulate until the existing coin 1s gradually withdrawn.
- The Bank encourages the public to accept the coins and use them.
Some section of the public have opined that this is just an act of printing new currency into the Ghanaian money market and not the ‘enhanced security features’ claimed by the central bank.
