NPP Delegates Conference: 7,121 Delegates to Elect Chairman, 8 Other National Officers in Kumasi

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will on Saturday, October 3, 2026, elect its next set of national officers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, with 7,121 delegates expected to vote in contests involving 47 aspirants for nine positions.

The National Delegates Conference will open at 9:00 a.m. with consideration of constitutional amendments, after which voting is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. The Electoral Commission (EC) will conduct the polls and verify delegate eligibility.

Ahead of the event, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has announced road closures and traffic diversions around the stadium, urging motorists to plan their journeys early.

The election is the party’s biggest internal contest since it chose its 2028 flagbearer earlier this year. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the NPP presidential primary in January, and Saturday’s vote will decide the team that leads the party’s machinery alongside him.

NPP election guidelines: voting time and ID requirements

Guidelines signed on September 30 by Frederick Opare-Ansah, Chairman of the National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC), provide for 31 polling stations for the exercise.

Delegates must have their names on the official register and present one valid ID: a voter ID card, a Ghana Card or an NPP party card.

“Your punctuality and cooperation will help ensure the orderly consideration of constitutional amendments and the smooth conduct of the elections,” the notice said.

EC says it is ready for NPP elections

The EC’s Director of Electoral Services, Samuel Kwaah, said all materials are in place. “All the preparations have been made, and EC is ready. Ballot papers are ready in the Ashanti Region,” he said.

Mr Opare-Ansah urged delegates to vote freely, avoid intimidation and maintain unity as members of one party.

Earlier, on September 28, he said concerns raised by aspirants over names in the delegates’ register had been investigated and corrected. “We’ve listened to them, we’ve investigated, we’ve corrected,” he told Channel One TV.

Kumasi road closures for NPP delegates conference

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, through Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, announced the following road closures for Saturday:

  • Bridginia Traffic Lights to Carvery Methodist Church
  • Unity Oil Fuel Station to T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School
  • Is My Kitchen Restaurant to Bridginia Traffic Lights

Commercial vehicles from Amakom will be diverted towards Asokwa, while traffic from Asafo will be redirected at the Bridginia lights. Vehicles moving from Kumasi City Mall towards Afful Nkwanta will use the Bulldog Restaurant route.

Wrongly parked vehicles will be towed at the owners’ expense. Delegates arriving by bus will park at Heroes Park, while MPs and MMDCEs will use the Scoreboard parking area.

What the NPP election means for party members and Kumasi residents

For party members, the vote decides who will run the NPP’s national secretariat, campaigns and grassroots organisation in the build-up to the 2028 general election.

For Kumasi residents and commuters, Saturday will bring restricted movement around the Baba Yara Stadium and nearby roads, so alternative routes should be planned in advance.

What happens next

Voting is expected to start around midday after the conference session, though the timetable could extend if needed. Results will be declared after counting under EC supervision. Official updates on electoral processes can be checked on the Electoral Commission of Ghana website.
