Ghana Water Company Limited has shut down its Treatment Plant at Kyebi over its inability to continue treatment of the high turbidity levels of the Birim river serving the community due to activities of illegal miners also known as galamseyers.
The continuous pollution of water bodies in Ghana due to galamsey activities has taken center stage with myriad efforts by the government to halt operations of these illegal miners going down the drain.
Activities of illegal mining have caused enormous damage to river Birim.
Calls to stop illegal miners, popularly known as galamseyers from continuing their destruction of lands, water bodies and farmlands have yielded no results.
The Okyehene demanded the arrest of all illegal miners in Kyebi and neighbouring towns following a courtesy call on the paramount Chief of Kyebi by the Association of Small-Scale Miners.
Some Ghanaians however have weighed in their thoughts describing the Okyehene’s move as late and laughable.
According some people, the Okyehene had slammed the President’s critics a couple of months ago calling the critics wizards and witches and further commended the President for his fight against galamsey.
Other reports also indicate that the Okyehene had ordered the destoolment of Nana Boakye Darkwa the Benkumhene of Asamang Tamfoe over Galamsey activities.
I order that the Benkumhene should not remain as the Benkumhene because he has defied the orders that I instructed the taskforce to protect the Akyem lands from all illegal mining activities.
The destruction of lands and water bodies going on at Asamang-Tamfoe, are you happy? You did something wrong and Okyenhene called you and you refused to come, because of galamsey all our water bodies are destroyed in even Kyebi here, the same as Tamfoe, I am not interested in mining, I hate it Okyenhene’s words.
