Effective Saturday, October 29, 2022, transportation fares are expected to go up by 19% as disclosed by Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU)
Ghanaians are expected to pay more for transportation after weeks of discussion and rumors on the subject.
The union has said that the move is imperative, and triggered by the continuous price hikes of petroleum products at the various fuel pumps.
Diesel is currently selling for over Ghc 15.00 and Petrol is selling for over GH¢13 at some fuel pumps; with myriad complaints from transport operators, expressing that the fuel price hikes is having adverse effects on their profits.
Some transport operators already announced new rates and commuters on the other hand expressed worry over the new increment.
VIP JEOUN announced new transport fares for travelers;
Accra- Kumasi previously was GH¢85 but now GH¢100, while Accra-Sunyani will now cost GH¢130 cedis.
Also, people moving from Accra to Tamale will have to pay GH¢240.
The 19% increment according to commuters is rather unfortunate as salaries have remained unchanged and the current economic conditions have already tossed financial burdens on them and this move will only make things worse.
This may not be the end of economic challenges as the Cedi keeps underperforming and fuel prices keep soaring globally, many Ghanaians are perturbed about this development.
