Huawei has launched a major digital skills training programme expected to equip 100,000 Ghanaians with industry-relevant technology skills over the next four years as part of Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme.
The initiative, being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, is designed to help build a skilled workforce capable of participating in Ghana’s expanding digital economy.
Five major technology areas targeted
The Huawei programme will focus on five key areas of technology: cloud computing, data communication, 5G, artificial intelligence and security and access technologies.
The areas have been selected to provide participants with practical skills linked to some of the fastest-changing parts of the global technology industry.
The programme forms part of Huawei’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s digital workforce development and expanding access to technical training beyond traditional technology centres.

The first phase of the initiative started with a Training of Trainers programme in Data Communication.
The training is designed to prepare selected participants with both technical knowledge and the instructional skills required to train additional beneficiaries under the One Million Coders Programme.
The approach creates a multiplier effect: instead of Huawei directly training every beneficiary, certified trainers can take the knowledge to other parts of the country and train additional participants.
Participants who successfully complete the training are expected to receive joint certification from Huawei and the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and subsequently serve as certified One Million Coders trainers.
One Million Coders expands beyond coding
The development also shows how Ghana’s One Million Coders Programme is expanding beyond the traditional idea of learning software coding.
The programme is increasingly incorporating areas such as networking, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing and other technical disciplines needed by modern businesses.
Earlier Training of Trainers sessions delivered with Huawei at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT focused on Datacom and Access Network Technologies.
The ministry said successful trainers would be expected to pass their knowledge on to at least 20 members of the public, helping extend digital skills training to communities across the country.

The One Million Coders Programme is intended to create a much larger pool of digitally skilled Ghanaians who can participate in technology-related employment, entrepreneurship and innovation.
