The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced a nationwide mop-up recruitment exercise to fill 465 vacancies for nurses, pharmacists and pharmacist technicians. The exercise opens on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. GMT.
The vacancies were left by applicants who were selected in the ministry’s 2026 recruitment but refused to report to their assigned districts and facilities.
The announcement was made in a statement dated Saturday, October 3, 2026, and signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the general public and all prospective applicants that it will undertake a nationwide mop-up recruitment exercise to replace applicants who have refused to report to their various selected districts and facilities,” the statement said.

Why the health ministry is holding a mop-up exercise
The mop-up follows the ministry’s main 2026 recruitment drive. In May, the ministry said more than 7,200 health professionals had secured placements out of 8,000 positions given financial clearance.
That figure included 6,245 nurses and midwives out of 6,500 slots, and 235 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians out of 250 slots. The ministry said then that the portal would reopen for a mop-up to fill remaining vacancies.
In August, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh gave newly recruited health professionals an August 20 deadline to report to their duty stations. The ministry later extended the deadline to August 31, warning that those who failed to report without a justifiable reason would be removed from the system and replaced through a mop-up.
Ghana has a large pool of unemployed trained health workers. The ministry said in May that more than 105,000 unemployed health professionals remained in the backlog. GhanaTrends has also reported on Ghana’s deal to create jobs for nurses in the US.
What the mop-up recruitment means for nurses and pharmacists
For unemployed nurses and pharmacy professionals, the exercise offers another chance at public sector employment in 2026, though the 465 slots are small compared with the number of people waiting.
Competition on the portal is expected to be high. During the main exercise earlier this year, applicants reported congestion and “no slots” messages, and the portal was unavailable on at least one scheduled mop-up day in May.
For hospitals and CHAG facilities, the exercise is meant to fill posts that remained empty after selected applicants failed to take them up.
What happens next
The portal opens at 11:00 a.m. GMT on Monday, October 5, 2026. The ministry has not announced a closing date in its statement.
Successful applicants will be expected to report to their assigned districts and facilities. Earlier in the year, the ministry said prompt reporting allows faster processing of appointment letters and salary validation.
