dr. kenneth ashigbey criticizes lack of urgency in addressing galamsey crisis amidst looming water shortage

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, has voiced his disappointment over the national response to the ongoing illegal mining (Galamsey) crisis in Ghana.

His concerns come in the wake of warnings from the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) about an impending water crisis if immediate steps are not taken to improve water treatment processes.

In a recent interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, September 5, Dr. Ashigbey highlighted the disconnect between the severity of the crisis and the actions taken by the government. He stressed that the nation’s response to galamsey lacks the urgency necessary to address its devastating environmental and societal impacts.

Dr. Ashigbey also criticized Ghana’s Parliament for its failure to take decisive action. With illegal mining contributing significantly to water contamination and inefficiencies in water production, he argued that more robust measures are needed to prevent a looming water shortage and protect the country’s natural resources.

Dr Kenneth Ashigbey ‘s Comments on Illegal Mining (Galamsey) in Ghana

So our response to this crisis has not shown that we are people in crisis. You have a situation where the Sekyereheman water source for Ghana Water Company is now recording 14,000 MCU where they are now producing at 25 capacity, you would have expected Parliament to say that this is a major crisis, he mentioned.
