dstv cuts prices in ghana new packages from gh¢50 to gh¢570 start november 5

MultiChoice Ghana has replaced its six DStv packages with four new, cheaper bouquets priced from GH¢50 to GH¢570 a month, with the new prices taking effect on November 5, 2026.

The packages were unveiled on Monday, October 26, at a joint press conference in Accra by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations and MultiChoice Ghana.

The new line-up is made up of Starter (GH¢50), Select (GH¢100), Sports (GH¢250) and Ultimate (GH¢570). The top package, Ultimate, replaces the Premium bouquet, which currently costs GH¢854.

MultiChoice Ghana Country CEO Alex Okyere said the change is permanent. “This is not a promo. These are the new packs, new prices that are here to stay,” he said.

Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George said the deal followed engagement between government and the pay-TV operator, which the ministry says began in June 2025. “The Ghanaian consumer is our ultimate interest,” he said.

New DStv packages and prices in Ghana

Here is what each of the four new DStv packs costs per month and what it offers, according to details shared at the briefing:

  • Starter – GH¢50: 90 channels, including Africa Magic Epic, Novelas Plus, Cartoon Network, M-Net Movies, TV3 and UTV, plus all La Liga matches.
  • Select – GH¢100: 123 channels, including M-Net Movies, Africa Magic Showcase, CNN and WWE.
  • Sports – GH¢250: the full DStv football offering, including the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Ligue 1, on top of the Starter and Select channels.
  • Ultimate – GH¢570: the full entertainment line-up plus premium sports such as Formula One, golf, tennis, MotoGP and rugby.

How the new DStv prices compare with the old packages

The biggest cuts are for viewers who pay for football and premium content. Full football access, which currently comes with the GH¢563 Compact package, will now cost GH¢250 under the Sports pack.

  • Premium (GH¢854) → Ultimate (GH¢570): down GH¢284, about 33%.
  • Compact (GH¢563) → Sports (GH¢250): down GH¢313, about 56%.
  • Family (GH¢188) → Select (GH¢100): down GH¢88, about 47%.
  • Starter: new entry-level pack at GH¢50.

“This pack is even better than Family, but 100 Ghana cedis,” Mr Okyere said of the Select bouquet. On the Sports pack, he said: “For all football lovers, we are introducing a pack called Sports.”

The pricing row between government and MultiChoice has been running for more than a year. GhanaTrends earlier reported on the DStv brouhaha and subscriber concerns in 2025.

DStv price cut linked to crackdown on piracy and ghost boxes

Government says the lower prices are meant to make legal content more affordable ahead of a planned crackdown on illegal TV streaming and so-called ghost boxes.

According to Graphic Online, the government is awaiting an opinion from the Attorney-General’s Department before the crackdown begins. The National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Cyber Security Authority have reviewed proposed technical measures, including blocking IP addresses used for illegal streaming.

A committee made up of the ministry, NCA, MultiChoice, National Security, Customs and other agencies will coordinate the exercise. Details are available from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations.

Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng, Executive Vice-President of Public Affairs for Rest of Africa at Canal+, said piracy takes income from producers, actors, costume designers and make-up artists. He also credited Ghana’s improved currency stability with making the new pricing possible.

What the new DStv packages mean for subscribers

For football fans, the change is significant. A viewer who paid GH¢563 for Compact can get the full football offering for GH¢250, which works out to about GH¢8.33 a day.

The minister said subscribers paying around GH¢850 to GH¢875 for premium content could save more than GH¢500 a month by switching to the Sports pack if football is their main interest.

Households that mainly watch movies, series and children’s content can now pay GH¢50 or GH¢100 instead of the old mid-tier prices.

What happens next

The new packages take effect on November 5, 2026. Existing subscribers should check which new pack matches their current bouquet before renewing.

Government also plans to start its anti-piracy enforcement once clearance is given following the Attorney-General’s opinion.
