Illegal Mining activities in Ghana have started facing force from the military as some miners leave Galamsey sites following president Akufo Addo’s directive over Galamsey in Ghana with organised Labour.

Organised labour suspended its planned nationwide strike, initially set for October 10, in protest against the government’s handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. The announcement was made by Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), following a meeting with the government on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

During the meeting, the government reportedly offered enhanced measures to address the galamsey crisis, prompting the labour unions to reconsider their position. Just days earlier, organised labour had expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts, signaling their intent to proceed with the strike.

The decision to suspend the strike has sparked disappointment among many Ghanaians, who viewed the planned action as a strong stance against the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining. Critics have expressed frustration over the perceived sudden reversal, questioning the effectiveness of the government’s newly proposed measures
