In the aftermath of a two-day negotiation between Organized Labour and the government, a significant victory has been achieved with a 23% increment in the base pay for the year 2024

The agreed-upon raise is slated to become effective from January 1, 2024, until June 2024. Additionally, there is a provision for further adjustment, with an extra 2% increment set to be implemented from July 2024 to December 2024, culminating in a total annual increase of 25%.

It’s noteworthy that Labour had initially presented a demand for a substantial 70% increment in the base pay for the year 2024, emphasizing the necessity of this adjustment to shield workers from the escalating cost of living.

Despite the success in negotiations, Dr Isaac Bampoe Addo, the Executive Secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), expressed dissatisfaction with the approved increment. Dr Addo contended that the government should have sufficient funds to meet Labour’s demands, urging a critical examination of fiscal wastage within the system to facilitate future negotiations for base pay increments.

Speaking at a news conference following the 23% increment announcement, Dr Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), conveyed optimism about the government’s commitment to diligently implementing the decision. The TUC’s decision to settle at a 23% increase reflects a balance between Labour’s demand and the practical considerations of the government.
