Ghana: Tema Oil Refinery Denies Allegations of Takeover by Sentuo Oil a Chinese Firm

tema oil refinery denies allegations of takeover by sentuo oil a chinese firm

Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has debunked claims of  takeover by Sentuo Oil Refinery Ltd., a Chinese-owned private oil refinery in Ghana, following allegations made by Mensah Thompson, the Executive Director of ASEPA (Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability).

Reportedly, Mr. Thompson disclosed that ASEPA received information from a whistleblower within TOR regarding a meeting between TOR management and Sentuo Oil Refinery Ltd. on April 4 on a takeover engagement.

According to Mr. Thompson’s statement, the whistleblower alleged that the meeting, which lasted from 10 am to 1 pm at the premises of TOR, was convened to discuss the potential sale of the national refinery to Sentuo.

He further claimed that a celebratory event took place at Sentuo Oil Refinery Ltd. following the meeting’s conclusion. Despite these assertions, TOR has not officially addressed the matter, nor has any media outlet reported on the alleged meeting.

In response to these developments, ASEPA has announced its intention to utilize the Right to Information Law to compel both TOR and Sentuo Oil Refinery to disclose the nature of their relationship. This includes seeking clarification on whether TOR has been sold outright to Sentuo or if certain aspects of TOR’s operations have been transferred to the Chinese-owned refinery.

Ghanaians and some political bigwigs have expressed concern about the details of the engagement between the two companies as the controversy unfolds.
