Squid Game Actor O Yeong-Su Found Guilty of Sexual Assault
South Korean actor O Yeong-Su, known for his role in the popular series “Squid Game,” has been handed an eight-month suspended prison term for sexual misconduct by a South Korean court.
The 79-year-old actor was accused in 2022 of sexually assaulting a woman on two occasions. These incidents reportedly occurred five years prior while the Squid Game actor was staying in a rural area for a theater performance in 2017, according to reports from AFP and the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court.
O Yeong-Su has expressed his intention to appeal the court’s decision within the given seven-day window.
The allegations against the Squid Game actor include forcibly hugging and kissing a woman against her will, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
In addition to the sentence, O Yeong-Su has been mandated to attend classes addressing sexual violence.
Judge Jeong Yeon-ju remarked that the victim’s consistent account and evidence presented appeared credible and reflective of genuine experiences.
Despite denying the allegations, O Yeong-Su was accused of committing the acts on a walking path and in front of the victim’s residence, according to the Suwon District Court.
The Squid Game actor gained global recognition for his role in “Squid Game,” a dystopian series where participants engage in lethal versions of childhood games. The show amassed over 100 million viewers worldwide within weeks of its 2021 release.
In 2022, the Squid Game actor made history by becoming the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Oh Il-nam, the eldest contestant in the competition.
The controversy surrounding the accusations led to O Yeong-Su being removed from an upcoming film project in South Korea, as reported by Reuters.
The issue highlights the importance of addressing sexual violence, with calls for accountability and acknowledgment of wrongdoing from the accused.
