Sophia Boadi, a 27-year-old widow, is on track to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest reading marathon. Starting on March 15, 2024, she aims to read continuously for six days at SG Mall in Kumasi, with the attempt scheduled to conclude on March 21, 2024, or later if necessary.
The current record, held by someone from Turkey, stands at 124 hours, reading just one book. However, Sophia has teamed up with the Ghana Library Association and has access to a collection of at least 460 books for her attempt.
Her reading list includes a variety of works, such as actress Yvonne Nelson’s memoir “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,” along with books by renowned personalities like Gifty Anti, Adjetey Anang, and Nakeeyat. Additionally, she plans to delve into newly-released books like the “History of Ashanti” and others by Ghanaian publishers.
Sophia’s motivation for this feat is to spotlight the intellectual richness of Ghanaian authors and publishers on a global stage. She also aims to inspire fellow young widows, emphasizing that despite the loss of a partner, there is still hope and the potential to achieve great things.
Sophia initiated her application in June 2023, and after a six-month wait, received official approval in November 2023. Confident in her abilities, she attributes her potential success to the grace of God.
