Specifically designed for the Tema-Mpakadan standard-gauge railway line, these trains are poised to facilitate seamless travel experiences for passengers traversing from Mpakadan through strategic waypoints such as Kpong, Juapong, and Doryumu, all the way to the bustling Tema port. Upon reaching Tema, passengers can seamlessly transition to a narrow-gauge line that leads them directly to the heart of Accra, Ghana’s vibrant capital city.

The Tema-Mpakadan railway is a pivotal component of a broader 1000 km interconnectivity initiative linking Ghana and Burkina Faso, signifying a concerted effort to bolster regional integration and economic cooperation. This ambitious project underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and bolstering its position as a key player in West Africa’s transportation landscape.

In a landmark handover ceremony held in Poland on February 2, 2024, top officials including the CEO of the Ghana Railways Development Authority convened to commemorate the delivery of these cutting-edge trains. During the ceremony, the CEO emphasized the pivotal role of a robust railway system in advancing Ghana’s industrialization agenda and fostering economic prosperity for its citizens.

Anticipation is high as the first train is slated to arrive in Ghana by March 2024, heralding a new era of modernization and efficiency in the country’s transportation sector. Following its arrival, rigorous testing protocols will ensue, culminating in a ceremonial commissioning presided over by the President in June 2024, underscoring the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing national infrastructure projects.

The acquisition of these contemporary trains represents a significant investment in Ghana’s railway infrastructure, with the procurement process forged through a comprehensive contract with the esteemed Polish manufacturer, PESA. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative design, Ghana aims to optimize rail network efficiency and bolster capacity, laying the foundation for sustained economic growth and prosperity across the nation.
