We are not going back to Dumsor, we leave that to Mahama President Akufo Addo Assures Amidst Threats by the IPPs

The Chamber of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has instructed its members to refrain from declaring power availability to the System Operator or cutting power supply to the national grid from July 1 to July 8, 2023.

The action by the IPPs is intended to emphasize their demand for the government to settle 30% of the outstanding $2 billion debt. According to an email from the Chamber to its six members, the thermal power producers have been urged not to supply power to the national grid during this period.

Further to our planned industrial action on July 1, 2023 to press home our demand, we would like each IPP to nominate nothing (zero nominations) and not declare an availability to the System Operator, beginning July 1 to July 8, 2023, statement read.

The mail thanked the members of the Chamber of IPPs for their support, and urged to push for government to heed to their demands.

We take this opportunity to salute you for your solidarity. We are determined to get results at all cost.

The email acknowledged the members’ unwavering support and expressed the Chamber’s determination to achieve results at any cost.

The members of the Chamber of IPPs, namely Sunon Asogli, Cenpower, Karpowership, AKSA, Twin City Energy, and CENIT, collectively generate 2010 megawatts of power. The withdrawal of these IPPs from the national grid is expected to create a power deficit, potentially resulting in power fluctuations or ‘Dumsor.’

This situation highlights the precarious position the country would be in if the thermal power producers disconnect from the national grid.
