President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo recently elucidated the motive behind his recent ministerial reshuffle, occurring towards the end of his term as he claims he did it for Ghanaians.
During an interview with JoyNews’ Foreign Affairs Correspondent Blessed Sogah in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the president emphasized the paramount importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people in all governmental decisions.
It is for the people of Ghana, not for me, The President added.
Departing from his customary practice of retaining ministers for prolonged periods, the President instigated a significant overhaul in response to escalating pressure from political factions, civil society organizations, and even factions within his own party. Announced on Wednesday, February 14, this move affected approximately 12 incumbent ministers, comprising 10 cabinet members and two regional ministers.
A notable figure affected by the reshuffle was Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta, who was removed from his position despite surviving earlier calls for his dismissal. The reshuffle reflects President Akufo-Addo’s determination to address concerns and rejuvenate governance as his term draws to a close.
Nevertheless, the opposition National Democratic Congress and its Minority Members of Parliament have decried the decision, labeling it as belated and devoid of inspiration. Despite criticism, President Akufo-Addo remains resolute in his commitment to effecting changes that prioritize the welfare and interests of the Ghanaian populace.
