Three prominent Ghana teacher unions, namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT-Gh), have jointly announced a nationwide strike, commencing from Wednesday, March 20.
According to a press release issued on March 20, the decision to initiate the industrial action was motivated by the perceived delay in addressing the conditions of service by the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.
The unions highlighted their concerns regarding the absence of a functional scheme of service for teachers within the Ghana Education Service, a matter that has been brought to the attention of the Director-General of GES.
Furthermore, the unions expressed disappointment over the failure to conclude negotiations for a new collective agreement by the stipulated deadline of February 29, 2024, as initially anticipated.
The declaration of the nationwide strike underscores the collective stance of GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-Gh in pressing for timely resolution and improvement in the conditions of service for educators across the country.
