The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has made an urgent appeal to the government to address the pressing concerns of Ghanaian Students Abroad Including on government scholarships.
The union’s plea follows significant distress among these students, particularly those in Morocco, who have been facing severe delays in the disbursement of their stipends for over ten months.
The affected students in Morocco recently staged a protest, highlighting the dire consequences of the prolonged delay in receiving their financial support.
They reported that the lack of funds has intensified their hardships, making it difficult for them to afford basic necessities such as food and sanitary products. This situation has placed immense strain on their wellbeing and academic performance.
Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, May 29, NUGS President Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel voiced the union’s dedication to resolving this issue.
He emphasized that the union stands in solidarity with the affected students and is committed to ensuring that their grievances are addressed promptly.
The prolonged delay in stipend release not only undermines the students’ living conditions but also hampers their ability to focus on their studies.
National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) President, Daniel Kyeremeh Oppong Laments
We are very perturbed by the current happenings but we are pretty much sure this listening government is going to take a quick step toward solving this particular challenge. Our students are suffering in Morocco, our students are suffering in the UK, our students are suffering in India, and most of the students on the Students Loan Trust Fund are also suffering. We need funds to facilitate education. Free senior high school is churning out a lot of numbers who are in our tertiary institutions.
The only way to keep them going, for them to also get knowledge to develop our country is to get them proper funding to keep them going.
The Students Loan Trust Fund is one key area that should be looked at. We are calling on the government and all agencies to come and rescue students in the country. He said.
