Air Tanzania has officially launched flights operations to Ghana on Wednesday January 28, 2026, at the Kotoka International Airport, connecting Dar es Salaam and Accra via Lagos to boost Africa’s air connectivity.

The historic maiden flight landed at Kotoka International Airport at approximately 5:00 PM GMT and was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute. The arrival was followed by a high-profile reception attended by the Tanzanian Minister for Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, alongside senior government and aviation officials from both countries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Mbarawa expressed confidence that the launch of Air Tanzania’s Ghana flights would deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and Tanzania. He emphasized that improved air connectivity would significantly enhance bilateral trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges across the African continent.

Air Tanzania Begins Ghana Operations with Accra–Dar es Salaam Route

Ghana’s Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, described the development as a step toward realizing a borderless Africa. He noted that African-owned airlines such as Air Tanzania play a critical role in making travel within the continent more accessible and affordable for Africans.

“Today marks another milestone for us, seeing our own from Africa, helping to connect our people, helping to make travel easy for our people and helping to boost trade and tourism potentials”, he stated.

Mr. Nikpe further welcomed Air Tanzania’s expansion into West Africa, stating that the Dar es Salaam–Accra–Lagos route would improve regional connectivity while creating new opportunities for commerce and tourism. He expressed optimism that the new service would stimulate increased movement of people and goods across the sub-region.

Also present at the event was Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, who highlighted the tourism potential unlocked by the new route. She described the development as a game-changer for cultural exchange, noting that East Africans now have a direct gateway to experience Ghana’s renowned “akwaba” hospitality.

“Let your cabins be a gallery of African excellence, we look forward to see Ghanaian chocolate and other related cuisines served  along side yours on board, pairing Ghanaian highlife and other genres in your in-flight entertainment”, she said.

Additionally, she emphasized the Ministry of Tourism, Culture a Creative Art’s willingness to partner with Air Tanzania and was looking forward to seeing our kente and heritage sites celebrated in their marketing.

With the addition of Ghana, Air Tanzania’s international network now spans 32 countries, reflecting the airline’s steady growth since its revitalization in 2016. The airline will operate three weekly flights to Accra via Lagos, reinforcing its vision of becoming a world-class carrier dedicated to connecting Africa.
