Accra High Court handling the high-profile illegal mining case against Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has directed lawyers for the state to disclose all relevant documents to the defense team.

The order came after Wontumi’s lead counsel, Andy Appiah, accused the Attorney General’s office of deliberately withholding evidence that could aid the defense in the ongoing trial involving Akonta Mining Company.

During Wednesday’s case management conference, the defense told the court that several critical documents, including witness statements and exhibits, had not been served despite repeated requests.

Justice Marie Louise Simmons described the complaint as serious and instructed the defense to file a formal application for disclosure by close of business on Monday, December 1, 2025. The trial has been adjourned to December 8, 2025.

Speaking to journalists outside the courtroom, Lawyer Andy Appiah expressed confidence that once the withheld documents are released, his client’s innocence will be further established.

Chairman Wontumi, who is facing charges of conspiracy and illegal mining, continues to enjoy a GH¢15 million bail with two sureties. The case remains one of the most watched in Ghana’s intensified fight against galamsey.

The outcome of the disclosure application is expected to significantly influence the pace and direction of the trial, which has already seen several state witnesses testify.
