Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), has expressed regret for allowing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to become the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer during the party’s presidential primaries in 2008.

Kyerematen explained that his decision was made to maintain peace and stability within the party after a tie in the primary results. He further mentioned that the move at the time was a divine direction though he regrets his decision.

Despite the strong opposition from his supporters, Kyerematen stood by his decision for stepping back from competing against Akufo-Addo in the subsequent run-off election. This decision was made in an effort to uphold party unity and avoid further discord within the NPP.

Kyerematen’s recent reflections reveal that he now regrets the choice he made over a decade ago. He admitted that the decision may have had unforeseen consequences for his political trajectory and career, suggesting a complex interplay between personal beliefs and political ambitions.

Alan Kyeremanten Remarked Expressing Regret About Akufo Addo

I wouldn’t have made that sacrifice again because, at that time, I considered a lot of things. I believed that I was stronger than him by that time. Due to the tension in the party at that moment and the fact that he is older than me, I allowed him to go.

Most of my supporters weren’t happy with the decision because of the efforts and the investments I made, but I didn’t care. Even apart from that, it was divine guidance where God spoke to me to allow him [Akufo-Addo] to go.

While his comments highlight a pivotal moment in the history of the NPP, Kyerematen’s willingness to share his thoughts on this past decision offers insight into the challenges and complexities of political leadership and decision-making.
