Electoral Commission of Ghana Extends Limited Voter Registration Deadline

limited voter registration deadline extended by the electoral commission of ghana

The Electoral Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for the Limited Voter Registration exercise, originally set to conclude on Monday, May 27.

The new deadline is now Wednesday, May 29, according to a note from the commission released on Friday, May 23. This extension aims to compensate for the challenges encountered during the first two days of the registration process.

The limited voter registration exercise, which began on Tuesday, May 7, is in preparation for the December 7 general elections. Initially, the EC indicated that it would not extend the registration period despite some initial setbacks. However, the unforeseen difficulties during the early days prompted a reassessment.

In a news conference held in Accra on Tuesday, May 21, Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations, Samuel Tetteh, emphasized that the registration process has been smooth overall, with a significant increase in the number of applicants. He noted that while the technical issues were resolved quickly, the extension was deemed necessary to ensure all eligible voters had an opportunity to register.

The decision to extend the registration period underscores the EC’s commitment to an inclusive and comprehensive electoral process. The additional days are expected to accommodate those who faced difficulties initially, thereby enhancing voter participation in the upcoming general elections.
