The New Patriotic Party (NPP) finds itself in a contemplative phase as its Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, formally requests an extension of time to deliberate on his choice of a running mate leading up to the 2024 election

The revelation surfaced through an announcement made by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, during a press conference convened in Accra.

Today should have been the day that our leader of the party and presidential candidate should have presented his running mate to the National Council. NPP’s General Secretary admitted in a speech at the Alisa Hotel.

However, upon request from the presidential candidate that’s because his election was done on the 4th of November 23, he needs a bit of time to continue with his consultation before it brings the proposed name for running mate to the National Council. And this was unanimously agreed by the National Council, he added.

NPP’s NEC & NC Agree to Dr. Bawumia’s Running Mate Time Extension

This development transpired subsequent to a pivotal meeting held by the NPP’s National Executive Committee and National Council on Wednesday, December 6, underscoring the significance of the matter at hand.

The essence of the gathering was aligned with the party’s constitutional stipulation, mandating the selection of a running mate a year in advance of a major election if the incumbent President is not the designated candidate.

Dr. Bawumia’s plea for an extended timeframe implies a temporary suspension of the party’s constitutional provision.

This maneuver allows for a more extensive and thorough consultation process, reflective of the gravity associated with the decision-making involved in selecting a running mate for the impending electoral contest.

Individuals such as Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Energy Minister), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (Education Minister), and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader), speculated to be leading candidates, will be navigating their prospects amidst competition from figures like John Ampontuah Kumah, Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, and Rev.
