In a heartbreaking incident during the Egnatia Rrogozhine game against Partizani Tirana, former Black Stars striker Raphael Dwamena tragically passed away after he collapsed on the pitch whilst playing
The unfortunate event was captured in a #trending video tweeted by GhanaTrends on X (internationa formerly Twitter when the Ghanaian collapsed on the pitch in the 23rd minute due to a heart seizure, as reported by Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio on November 11, 2023.
Efforts to save Dwamena’s life proved unsuccessful, despite the swift response of the team doctors who rushed to the field. This devastating turn of events marks the end of a promising career for the talented striker.
Dwamena had faced challenges related to his health, leading to his release from the club in 2022 due to heart complications. Subsequently, in January, he joined the Albanian side F Egnatia. Throughout his nine-year professional career, Dwamena showcased his skills in various clubs, including Levante, Real Zaragoza, Red Bull Salzburg, and FC Zurich.
His international career with the Black Stars, unfortunately, was cut short by his recurring heart issues. Making his debut in 2017, Dwamena played a total of nine games for the national team, contributing two goals before his premature departure from the sport.
Notably, Dwamena had been playing with an implanted defibrillator since 2020, following his first heart seizure. The severity of his condition became evident in November 2021 when he suffered a cardiac arrest during a game for BW Linz against TSV Hartberg in the OFB Cup. Collapsing on the sidelines in the 20th minute during the round of 16 match, this incident highlighted the ongoing health challenges Dwamena faced throughout his career.
