On Monday, May 26, 2025, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), appeared before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra. His appearance followed renewed allegations linking his company, Akonta Mining, to illegal mining activities, particularly within protected forest reserves in Ghana.

Chairman Wontumi Released on Bail After CID Interrogation Over Akonta Mining Allegations

The interrogation, which lasted several hours, formed part of an ongoing investigation into illegal mining (galamsey) operations in the country. The issue has become a major public concern, with recent exposés and environmental damage reports sparking outrage. Following the session, Chairman Wontumi was granted bail with two sureties as investigations continue.

Speaking to the media after his release, Wontumi expressed confidence in his innocence. He disclosed that he had presented comprehensive documentation to the CID, which he believes clearly proves that neither he nor Akonta Mining engaged in any unauthorized or illegal mining practices. “I’ve handed over all documents that confirm our activities have been lawful and within designated zones,” he said.

Wontumi also criticized what he termed as “politically motivated attacks” aimed at tarnishing his image and that of his company. He assured the public that he would fully cooperate with the investigation and remained confident that the truth would ultimately vindicate him.

The case continues to draw public interest, as it intersects with Ghana’s broader battle against illegal mining and efforts to preserve its natural environment. It also tests the government’s resolve to hold politically connected individuals accountable, regardless of party affiliation.
