During President Nana Akufo-Addo’s visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ghanaians living in the United States staged a protest, voicing their concerns over illegal mining (commonly referred to as galamsey) and corruption in Ghana.

The protesters accused the president’s administration of failing to effectively combat illegal mining, which has caused significant environmental damage, including the destruction of water bodies and farmlands across the country.

The demonstrators also raised broader issues of corruption, alleging that under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, government officials and powerful individuals have been implicated in corrupt practices without facing adequate consequences. They argued that the president has not taken decisive enough action to root out corruption within his administration, leaving ordinary Ghanaians to bear the economic and environmental costs.

Chanting slogans and holding signs, the protesters expressed their frustration with what they described as wrong treatment of protestors in Ghana over the Galamsey menace, denying them, food, water and medication. This development have drawn myriad criticism from many in Ghana.

The protest highlights the growing discontent among sections of the Ghanaian diaspora, many of whom feel that the country’s leadership is failing to protect its natural resources and ensure good governance.
