Contrary to the anticipation that the leaked tape scandal, exposing an alleged plot against Inspector General of Police COP George Akuffo Dampare, would bring embarrassment to those involved, the central figure in the controversy, retired Police Commissioner COP George Alex Mensah, sees it as a fortuitous turn of events, claiming its a blessing and has made him popular
COP George Alex Mensah, who officially retired on September 18, 2023, after dedicating 31 years to the police service, had been on leave when a leaked tape surfaced. In the recording, he criticized Dr. Dampare’s administration and hinted at withholding support for the governing party leading up to the 2024 elections if Dampare remained in office.
The leaked conversation also involved another senior police officer, Superintendent George Asare, and Bugri Naabu, a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, who admitted to recording the dialogue.
Having appeared before a parliamentary committee investigating the tape’s contents, COP Alex Mensah (Retd.) went on to make additional disparaging remarks about the IGP, labeling him as the worst in the history of the police service.
Despite the ongoing inquiry and the parliamentary committee yet to release its report after questioning all parties involved, COP Alex Mensah seems unperturbed by the unfolding events.
In an interview with Evans Mensah on PM Express, the retired COP expressed a surprising sentiment, stating that the entire episode, rather than causing distress, has turned out to be a blessing. The unexpected twist in fortunes for COP Alex Mensah adds a layer of complexity to the unfolding saga surrounding the leaked tape controversy.
You see, God has His own way of blessing people. Had it not been for this tape, maybe we wouldn’t have been here. My name and my picture wouldn’t have been where it is circulating now. Now, if you go to my constituency, everybody knows me. Everybody is looking for me, he said.
My friends who have not heard from me for years are calling me from the U.S., U.K., and Germany everywhere. God has His own way of bringing up somebody. Sometimes you will not understand, but at the end of the day, you will understand and say, I thought this was a problem, but that was the way the Lord is using to bring you up, he added.
