The Supreme Court of Ghana dismissed the initial objection raised by the Speaker of Parliament’s lawyer, Thaddeus Sory, in a case challenging the anti LGBTQ bill.

The court heard the case on Wednesday, May 8, which was televised live, as lawyers for journalist Richard Sky, who filed the case, sought to amend one of the requested injunctions.

Thaddeus Sory, representing the Speaker of Parliament, opposed the motion. He argued that he had already expressed his disagreement with the language of the requested relief in earlier filed documents and that allowing an amendment would counter his stance.

Journalist Richard Dela Sky and researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi were present in court on May 8, 2024, to proceed with their lawsuits challenging the passage of the anti-LGBTQI bill. After listening to arguments, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, ruled that the preliminary objection was unnecessary and did not serve any purpose in the court proceedings.

The court emphasized that each party has the right to present their reliefs as they see fit to address the core issues at hand. The Chief Justice criticized the Speaker’s legal team, stating that their objection had wasted the court’s time and energy without providing any substantial benefit.
