Activist Serdi Ben Ali made a strong statement on the first day of the Concerned Citizens demonstration against illegal mining also known as Galamsey in Ghana.
During the protest, Ben Ali directed his message to both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging them to prioritize the destruction caused by Galamsey.

The protest, which focused on demanding clean water for affected communities, also included calls for the release of Democracy Hub protestors who remain in police custody after protesting against government inaction. The Concerned Citizens movement has gained traction as more Ghanaians grow frustrated with the government’s handling of the illegal mining crisis, which has devastated natural resources, caused deformities in newborn babies and polluted water bodies across the country.
As tensions rise, the protests reflect a broader public outcry over the impact of Galamsey on the environment and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians. The powerful scenes of day one, combined with Ben Ali’s message, “Clean water over 24-hour economy, Clean water over credit score system, #FreeTheCitizen #StopGalamseyNow” emphasize the urgent need for sustainable solutions and political accountability in tackling the galamsey issue.
