The visit which is expected to be  a week-long diplomatic mission to Ethiopia and Ghana, aims to fortify the United Kingdom’s ties with these African nations.

In Ethiopia, Rayner oversaw the signing of a £475 million investment deal designed to stimulate mutual economic growth. She engaged with prominent leaders, including African Union Chairman Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, highlighting the UK’s commitment to deepening historical connections with Ethiopia.

Her itinerary also included visits to healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and interactions with women’s groups and young entrepreneurs supported by the British Council. Discussions encompassed potential collaborations in artificial intelligence with Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Temesgen Tiruneh.

Despite facing criticism from Conservative circles for her absence from domestic affairs, Rayner’s allies and Downing Street defend the trip as crucial for advancing the UK’s international agenda and supporting British enterprises. Later this week, Rayner is scheduled to arrive in Ghana to explore growth opportunities with local leaders and Ghanaian-British business figures.
