The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has reduced the price floors for petrol and diesel for the second pricing window of October 2026, setting petrol at GH¢16.09 per litre and diesel at GH¢17.09 per litre from October 16 to 31. The price floor for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), however, rises to GH¢13.87 per kilogramme.
The new floors cut petrol by GH¢0.36 and diesel by GH¢0.88 per litre compared with the first October window, when petrol was pegged at GH¢16.45 and diesel at GH¢17.97, according to figures reported by Pulse Ghana.
LPG moves in the opposite direction, rising by GH¢2.77 from GH¢11.10 per kg, an increase of about 24.95%. The NPA also set floors of GH¢17.20 per litre for local marine gas oil (MGO) and GH¢17.45 per litre for kerosene.
All Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and LPG Marketing Companies (LPGMCs) are required to comply with the floors during the two-week window, in line with the Petroleum Products Pricing Guidelines (PPPG).
NPA price floor for petrol and diesel falls from October 16
The cut follows increases in September, when the floors rose to GH¢16.00 for petrol and GH¢16.77 for diesel in the September 16 window, before climbing further in the first October window.
The NPA did not give a specific reason for the changes in its announcement. It said the floors were set under its pricing directives and the PPPG.
New fuel price floors vs previous window
- Petrol: GH¢16.45 → GH¢16.09 per litre (down GH¢0.36, -2.19%)
- Diesel: GH¢17.97 → GH¢17.09 per litre (down GH¢0.88, -4.90%)
- LPG: GH¢11.10 → GH¢13.87 per kg (up GH¢2.77, +24.95%)
- Marine gas oil (local): GH¢17.20 per litre
- Kerosene: GH¢17.45 per litre
What a fuel price floor means
A price floor is the minimum ex-pump price below which fuel should not be sold during a pricing window. It is not the final price motorists pay at the pump.
The NPA said the floors exclude premiums charged by International Oil Trading Companies (IOTCs), operating margins of Bulk Import, Distribution and Export Companies (BIDECs), and the margins of marketers and dealers. Each company sets those components itself, so actual pump prices will vary from station to station.
Government support for diesel prices
The new floors come amid government efforts to keep fuel affordable. In September, NPA Chief Executive Godwin Tameklo said the government had spent more than GH¢1 billion cushioning consumers, including a GH¢2-per-litre support on diesel.
Tameklo said fuel would have cost “not less than GH¢28 per litre” without the intervention. He also said the NPA was running scenarios on extending the support to petrol and had submitted them to Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor.
Ahead of the first October window, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers projected a sharp diesel increase. GhanaTrends reported at the time that COPEC projected diesel to rise 22.91% from October 1.
What it means for motorists and households
Drivers of petrol and diesel vehicles could see some relief at the pumps from October 16, as the lower floors give OMCs room to reduce prices. Commercial transport operators, whose costs depend heavily on diesel, are likely to watch pump prices closely.
Households and businesses that use LPG for cooking should prepare for higher costs. The near-25% jump in the LPG floor is the biggest move in this window.
What happens next
OMCs and LPG marketers are expected to announce their own pump prices for the window, which starts on Friday, October 16, 2026, and runs to October 31. The next price floors will cover the first pricing window of November.
Full pricing notices are published by the regulator on the National Petroleum Authority website.
