The Trades Union Congress of Ghana spearheaded by Dr Yaw Baah has threatened to strike on May 2 as it sides with the nine-labor-union FORUM in demanding the release of second-tier pension funds from the government.
Secretary General of the TUC, Dr. Yaw Baah, announced this decision during a conference held at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region. The TUC’s involvement adds momentum to the collective action planned for May 2, 2024, should the government fail to comply with the demand for the release of pension funds.
Remarks by the Dr Yaw Baah, TUC General Secretary
The forum has already given notice of strike on 2nd May, we will want to send this notice to government that by 30th of April, if they don’t do anything about the second- tier on the 2nd May, we will all join the strike, and I can’t imagine what will happen in this country if they allow this to happen. He said.
The FORUM, comprising of key labor unions including CLOGSAG, GMA, GRNMA, JUSAG, GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT, Ghana Association of Anesthetists, and GHOSPA, has already served notice of a nationwide strike on May 2, 2024.
The unified stance of these unions underscores the urgency and importance of addressing the issue of withheld pension funds. With the TUC’s participation, the call for action gains further credibility and amplification, signaling a unified front in advocating for workers’ rights and financial security.
As the deadline approaches, the pressure on the government to release the second-tier pension funds intensifies. The collective action by the TUC and the FORUM reflects the resolve of Ghana’s labor force to assert their demands and ensure that their welfare is prioritized.
