The Akatsi South Municipality has reported a suspected outbreak of the Cassava Brown Streak Disease, which is capable of causing impeding growth in the sector
The Department of Agriculture, operating under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture of the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly, urged farmers in the area to promptly report any instances of deteriorated cassava roots found on their farms.
The municipality has recently identified a potential case of Cassava Brown Streak Disease, a viral infection affecting cassava plants.
Charles Grunitzky, the Director of Agriculture in the municipality, disclosed that five suspected cases have been recorded within the region, resulting in the destruction of approximately nine acres of cassava farms.
In response, he emphasized the importance of farmers and the public reporting any similar incidents to the department immediately to prevent further spread.
To mitigate the situation, Mr. Grunitzky’s department has already implemented urgent measures, such as employing clean planting materials and maintaining farm hygiene to combat weeds, insects, and white flies.
Additionally, arrangements are being made to host officials from the Ministry of Agriculture to assess the situation thoroughly.
