Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) will on Tuesday, February 28 appear in Parliament to answer questions on a new constitutional instrument seeking parliamentary approval.
The C.I. when passed will render the Ghana Card the primary document for the Ghana’s voters registration.
The Minority in Parliament has kicked against the Constitutional Instrument describing the move as highly influenced by the ruling party New Patriotic Party to boost its election numbers.
Ghanaians and renowned economists have bemoan the move by the Electoral Commission warning that this will consequently disenfranchised many Ghanaians in the upcoming general elections 2024.
Jean Mensa is expected to appear before parliament along with Dr. Ken Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA).
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu assured the house of contacting the EC boss and that she agreed to honour their invitation on Tuesday.
The EC officials had established contact with the Chairperson, who had agreed to come down for us to have the committee of the whole meeting, but she delayed because the Minority MPs were picking up their parliamentary forms. So on Tuesday, she will appear, and we will continue with the committee of the whole meeting. Majority Leader assured.
Some unconfirmed reports also stated that the Ghana Card as the only document for voters registration had already been passed, claims that were emphatically refuted by Parliament Public Affairs.
