Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is deeply troubled by being labeled a fugitive by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), according to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
He expressed concern over the negative impact of such allegations, stating that Ofori-Atta, who has served the nation, does not deserve to be tagged in this manner.
Afenyo-Markin firmly rejected the fugitive claims, emphasizing that the former minister has not absconded but is currently receiving medical treatment in the United States. He insisted that Ofori-Atta’s absence is purely for health reasons and has nothing to do with evading legal scrutiny. He urged the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions without considering the facts.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin on Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta
The Minority Leader further assured that within a reasonable timeframe, Ken Ofori-Atta will return to the country and respond to any matters that require his attention. He argued that labeling him a fugitive in his absence was unfair and could tarnish his reputation unjustly. He called for patience and due process in handling any legal or investigative concerns surrounding the former minister.
Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, as of this morning, I had an extensive engagement with him, he is traumatized by the labelling of this adjective [fugitive] described to his person but he still knows that his God is with him. He is undergoing some medical procedures. In fact I had an early morning engagement with the Chief of Staff who confirmed that indeed Mr Ken Ofori-Atta wrote to him and he is in receipt of the letter. So within a reasonable time, I am sure he would come, Minority Leader remarked.
The controversy surrounding Ofori-Atta’s alleged fugitive status has sparked heated discussions, with some questioning the timing of the OSP’s claims. While some believe the former minister should be held accountable if found guilty of any wrongdoing, others insist that his current medical condition should not be politicized. The debate continues as Ghanaians await further developments.
