Russian Embassy in Ghana has denied claims by US Vice President which sought to blame Russian-Ukraine war for Ghana’s economic crisis and Food Insecurity in Africa

In tweet by the Russian Embassy, two pictures were juxtaposed comparing what they dubbed ‘fake’ vs ‘facts’ adding that Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit ‘has gone without another portion of anti-Russian fakes that do not stand a simple fact-checking’

US Vice President’s speech about the Ghanaian economy attributed the country’s economic challenges to the Russian-Ukraine conflict and the post-Covid shocks. She added that her administration will facilitate Ghana’s quest to secure an IMF bailout.

In terms of the Russia’s unprovoked war in Ukraine. There have been a number of impacts globally and to the United States included. In particular, it relates to the prevalence of our ability to have access to certain foods, and grain in particular, globally has been an issue, Kamala Harris reportedly said.

In response to this, the Russian embassy on its Twitter handle debunked this claim, and further blamed the U.S. sanctions for food insecurity in the African continent.

The recent visit of US Vice President Kamala Harris to Ghana hasn’t gone without another portion of anti-Russian fakes that do not stand a simple fact-checking.

FACT: European officials acknowledged thatUkraine has already supplied 53 million tonnes of grain and other food products – its annual export amount (for comparison: in 2019-2020 season – 54.9 M tonnes, in 2020-2021 – 44.9 M tonnnes.

QUESTION: Why is then Africa facing food insecurity?

ANSWER: 1) Because of EU and US sanctions that block the RUSSIAN grain export.

2) Because 45% of the total volume of grain exported from Ukraine went to Europe and only 3% went to Africa.

Political Discourse of Food Insecurity and Economic Challenges in Ghana

The ruling political party has attributed the country’s economic woes to the Russian-Ukraine war and the post-Covid shocks which has been met with an equal argument from the opposition party NDC refuting such claims.

The opposition NDC has stated emphatically and repeatedly that the economic crisis in the country is as a result of incompetency on the part of government, adding that some neighboring countries though were also hit by post-Covid shocks and the Russian-Ukraine war, are doing relatively well hence such claims by government cannot be taken seriously.
