The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) says it will recruit 17,200 young people in November 2026, including 6,000 community teaching assistants to be deployed to basic schools by the end of the month.
YEA Chief Executive Officer Malik Basintale announced the plan on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the Government Accountability Series press briefing at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The remaining 11,200 places are for skills training under the Ghana Women and Youth Employment and Social Cohesion Programme, which is supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The teaching assistant placements follow a memorandum of understanding (MoU) the YEA signed with the Ghana Education Service (GES) in September 2026. Mr Basintale said the MoU provides for “the onboarding of some 6000 beneficiaries, who will be deployed by the end of November this year.”
YEA recruitment: 17,200 slots across two main programmes
The November intake is split between classroom support and skills training. Graphic Online, MyJoyOnline and Citi Newsroom all reported the 6,000 teaching assistant figure from the briefing.
- Community Teaching Assistant Model: 6,000 beneficiaries, deployment expected by end of November 2026
- AfDB-backed skills training: 11,200 beneficiaries, recruitment expected to start in the first week of November 2026
- Total November target: 17,200 young people
- Skills programme funding: US$3.6 million (about GH¢44 million, according to Graphic Online)
How the YEA Community Teaching Assistant Model will work
Under the model, qualified young people will teach or assist teachers in basic schools, with a focus on hard-to-reach communities where staffing gaps are common.
Mr Basintale stressed that the assistants would not replace trained teachers but would support teaching and learning in the schools where they are posted.
Beneficiaries are expected to gain classroom experience and professional skills while earning an income. The YEA has not yet published eligibility criteria, allowance levels or an application portal for the programme.
YEA skills training areas for 11,200 beneficiaries
The 11,200 skills training places will run under the AfDB-supported Ghana Women and Youth Employment and Social Cohesion Programme. According to the YEA, training will cover:
- Briquette production
- Bio-digester construction and installation
- Hospitality and domestic services, under the Awaawi Care Connect initiative
- Construction
- Sustainable transport services
- Beauty care services
Other YEA programmes: IT and motorbike dispatch
Separately, the agency said 2,000 young people will be placed in IT programmes through an agreement with Ghana Digital Centres.
Another 2,000 will join a motorbike dispatch and delivery initiative. That intake is the first batch toward a target of 10,000 beneficiaries over four years.
YEA beneficiaries reach 100,628 as of September 2026
Mr Basintale also gave an update on the agency’s performance. As of September 30, 2026, the YEA had recorded 100,628 beneficiaries, about 75.7% of its annual target of 133,000.
In security-related modules, the agency reported 11,788 Community Police Assistants engaged and deployed against a target of 12,000 (98.2%), as well as 4,888 Fire Service Assistants and 5,207 Prison Office Assistants.
He said the YEA has reached retention agreements with security agencies to absorb at least 60% of beneficiaries once their two-year stints end. “Youth employment must increasingly become a bridge to lasting careers,” he said. The announcement comes a day after Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak said there will be no security services recruitment in 2027 until a backlog is cleared.
What the YEA recruitment means for unemployed youth
For young job seekers, the November intake offers 17,200 new openings in a single month, with teaching support and practical trades making up the bulk of the slots.
Mr Basintale noted, however, that the YEA’s mandate is training, workplace attachment and skills development, not direct employment in mainstream public or private sector jobs. The placements are meant to build experience that can lead to longer-term work.
For basic schools in hard-to-reach areas, the 6,000 assistants could ease pressure on teachers in classrooms that are short of staff.
Recruitment for the 11,200 skills training slots is expected to begin in the first week of November 2026, while the 6,000 community teaching assistants are due to be deployed by the end of November.
Applicants should watch for official guidance on eligibility and how to apply from the Youth Employment Agency and the Ghana Education Service, and avoid unofficial recruitment links.
