WAEC Cracks Down on Exam Malpractice: Six Teachers and Numerous Students Arrested

waec arrests students and teachers for wassce malpractice

Reports indicate that some students and teachers have been arrested by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for malpractice during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ghana.

The council announced the arrest of six teachers and invigilators who were allegedly involved in unethical practices to aid students during the examinations. The crackdown underscores WAEC’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process.

According to John Kappi as he spoke to JoyNews, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, these teachers were reportedly caught in the act of writing answers for candidates, a serious violation of examination regulations. Such activities not only compromise the fairness of the exams but also undermine the credibility of the entire educational system.

Remarks Made by John Kappi, Head of West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Regarding West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Malpractice.

In terms of teachers, I can say so far, we have about six of them who have been picked up for various offences. The candidates are a lot of them. It is not easy to give the number right now. We are still putting together the figures, and as and when we are able to compile the list, we will be able to put out the figure,

We have picked up in some of the areas where we were told that they wanted to collect money, and then assist the candidates…We set our monitors around – there were actually widespread examination malpractices. They were able to pick up a number of them. In fact, it’s overwhelming.

We have looked at the numbers, and basically, it’s about them having foreign material on them and then, in some cases, there’s a report about them writing on the board for the candidates to copy, he remarked.

In addition to the teachers, numerous students have also been apprehended for participating in various forms of malpractice. WAEC’s swift response to these incidents highlights the council’s zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that could jeopardize the standard of education in the region. This latest enforcement serves as a stern warning to all stakeholders involved in the examination process.
