Andrew Egyapa Mercer Defends National Cathedral Construction During His Ministerial Appointment Vetting

Andrew Egyapa Mercer Defends National Cathedral

During his vetting, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, the Minister-designate for the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, defended the construction of the controversial National Cathedral.

He expressed his firm belief in completing the project, emphasizing its status as a national asset. Despite criticisms dubbing it the ‘world’s most expensive hole,’ Mercer asserted that allocated funding should be utilized to finish the construction.

Some funding has gone in there, and I find the notion of the ‘world’s most expensive hole’ is palatable to anybody, It is our national asset that is in that state and it has to be completed, and so if you want a definite answer that i have the opportunity to request parliament to consider and approve a budget for the completion of the National Cathedral then yes. he remarked.

Questions arose during the vetting regarding the prioritization of the National Cathedral construction over other projects. Mercer affirmed his commitment to advocating for additional funding from other ministries, highlighting existing financial investments in the project. He urged critics to refrain from derogatory descriptions of the initiative.

However, concerns were raised by the committee regarding potential irregularities in the project, particularly surrounding the contract award process and the contractor involved. The committee called upon Mercer to investigate these allegations further, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in the project’s execution.
