cecilia dapaah resigns as minister for sanitation and water resources amidst stolen money allegations

Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, has tendered her resignation in the wake of a scandal involving stolen of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis from her residence

The alleged theft was committed by two house helps, resulting in the disappearance of $1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghanaian cedis in October 2022 at her residence in Abelenkpe, Accra.

In her resignation letter addressed to the President, Cecilia Dapaah explained that she stepped down to prevent the matter from becoming a hindrance to the government’s crucial work. The incident came to light on July 21, and the accused individuals, Patience Botwe (18) and Sarah Agyei (30), are facing charges for conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing.

Cecilia Dapaah expressed concern over inaccuracies in the figures reported by the media and vowed to cooperate fully with state agencies to establish the facts. She maintained her integrity during her tenure in public service and is confident that she will be cleared of all allegations.

I do not want this matter to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time, she said.

Whereas I can state emphatically that those figures do not represent correctly what my husband and I reported to the Police, I am very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position.

I intend to cooperate fully with all state agencies to enable them fully establish the facts. I have no doubt whatsoever that at the end of the processes, it will be fully established that I have conducted myself with integrity during my period in public service and I will be fully exonerated from all the allegations that have filled the public domain in the past 24 hours. She further stated.

The Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, along with other voices, called for Cecilia Dapaah’s resignation to facilitate an independent investigation into the source of the stolen funds, especially considering her status as an Article 71 Office Holder.

Sylvester Tetteh, the Member of Parliament for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, insisted that Cecilia Dapaah must provide further details about the stolen money to prevent disaffection within their party (NPP) and urged the President to take appropriate action in light of the situation.

I think that she should help us by providing further particulars because this has the potential to cause disaffection in our party (NPP) and so the president must take action, he opined.
