New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Wontumi urges President John Mahama to address Kevin Taylor’s insults toward Adum PZ fire victims.

The devastating fire, which occurred in early April 2025, left numerous traders in financial distress, prompting support from various stakeholders, including a GH¢150,000 donation from the Ashanti Regional Parliamentary Caucus. However, Taylor, a US-based Ghanaian known for his controversial commentary, criticized the traders for rejecting food donations from the Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka calling their demands unreasonable and sparking widespread backlash.

Chairman Wontumi, speaking to the fire victims on April 7, 2025, expressed disappointment over Taylor’s remarks, labeling them as insensitive and disrespectful to the victims who are struggling to rebuild their livelihoods. He emphasized the traders’ contributions to the local economy and urged President Mahama to take action against Taylor, whom he accused of using his platform to undermine the dignity of Ghanaians during a time of crisis. Wontumi also highlighted the NPP’s commitment to supporting the victims, noting that the party has been working alongside MPs to provide financial aid and advocate for government-backed soft loans to aid in the reconstruction of the burnt shops.

The controversy has reignited debates about the role of social media influencers in shaping public discourse, particularly during times of disaster. While Taylor has not yet responded to the criticism, his comments have drawn ire from other public figures, including US-based commentator Twene Jonas, who also demanded an apology. As the Adum PZ traders continue their recovery efforts, Chairman Wontumi’s appeal underscores the need for unity and empathy, urging leaders to foster constructive dialogue rather than division in the wake of such tragedies.
