President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has relieved Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang of his duties as the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), effective from Monday, April 15, 2024 replacing him with deputy, son of Yaw Osafo Maafo, Kofi Bosompem Osafo Maafo.
The decision, communicated through a letter dated April 8, 2024, signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Bediatuo Asante, outlines the president’s directive for Dr. Ofori-Tenkorang to cede his responsibilities to Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, one of his deputies.
The dismissal as initiated by the President of Ghana also being his executive responsibility is a significant change in leadership within SSNIT, a crucial institution responsible for social security and insurance in Ghana. President Akufo-Addo’s decision according to many is geared towards addressing perceived shortcomings or pursuing new initiatives under fresh leadership.
The appointment of Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo as the interim Director-General suggests a continuity plan within SSNIT’s leadership structure. Osafo-Maafo’s elevation to this role highlights his experience and capacity to steer the institution through this transition period.

Reference is made to your appointment letter dated 1st July, 2019, issued by the Public Services Commission. In accordance with paragraph 8 of the said appointment letter, I regret to inform you that the President has terminated your appointment effective 15th April, 2024 with three (3) months’ salary in lieu of notice.
To ensure a smooth transition, kindly hand over and cease to act as the Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) no later than close of business on Monday, 15th April, 2024. Part of the letter read.
