The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly called on Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) over bloated register to issue a public apology to Ghanaians.
In a press conference held in Accra on Monday, the EC acknowledged its responsibility for inaccuracies in the voter register, particularly in the Ejumako-Enyan-Esiam constituency.
The party expressed concerns that errors in the voter register could undermine the integrity of the upcoming elections and risk disenfranchising many eligible voters.
The Commission attributed the issue to an error, which led to an inflated number of registered voters. The NDC had earlier accused the EC of deliberately colluding with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to inflate the register by more than 3,000 voters.
Deputy Chairman of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare, clarified during the press conference that the inflated voter figures were the result of an inadvertent inclusion of voter transfer lists from 2020 and 2023 in the current register. This mistake, he explained, was not intentional but rather a procedural oversight that led to the discrepancy.
Following this admission, Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, expressed his party’s dissatisfaction during an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Wednesday.
He argued that the EC’s explanation was insufficient to restore public trust, insisting that an external audit of the voter register is necessary to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
In addition to calling for an audit, Dr. Rashid-Computer reiterated the NDC’s demand for the Electoral Commission to issue a formal apology to the people of Ghana. The party believes that only through such an apology and corrective measures can the EC begin to rebuild the trust of the electorate.
Dr. Tanko Rashid-Computer’s Remarks over Ghana’s Electoral Commission Bloated Register
We said we don’t trust their internal investigation. We are calling for an external body to audit them because this EC cannot be trusted in even handling their own data.
Listening to them they migrated 2020 transfers into these current transfers by bloating it…They should apologise to Ghanaians, he stated.
