Reports indicate that The former Finance Minister under the late President Jerry John Rawlings, Professor Kwesi Botchwey has passed away today November 19, 2022 while receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

He was Minister for Finance and Economic Planning from 1982 to 1995, appointed by the late Jerry Rawlings to assist in stabilizing Ghana’s collapsed economy.

His laudable efforts in stabilizing Ghana’s economy have not been forgotten as tributes poured in allude to this fact.

 

Prof. Kwesi Botchwey’s Profile and Education

Kwesi Botchwey was born on 3rd September 1944. (78 years) He was Ghanaian government official and Professor of Practice in Development Economics at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University.

Botchwey received his secondary school education at the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School in Ghana. Botchwey held an LL.B. from the University of Ghana, a LL.M from Yale Law School, and a doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School. He taught at the University of Zambia, the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and the University of Ghana.

Prof. Kwesi Botchwey is a very revered economist and governance expert for his achievements in politics and education. His service during the military era of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) (1982 to 1991) and the constitutional period of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) (1992 to 1995)

Prof. Botchwey also worked as an advisor to the UNDP’s UN Special Initiative on Africa and an advisor to the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM).

He is known to be one of Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Ministers.

The news of his demise came as a shock many Ghanaians and tributes keep pouring in from renowned politicians and economists.
