This incident, captured in a viral YouTube Shorts video, underscores the volatile nature of the Ablekuma North rerun and the urgent need for stronger measures to ensure peaceful elections in Ghana

Eyewitnesses reported that a group of unidentified men stormed the polling center in a coordinated attack, targeting Koomson after she allegedly defied police instructions to leave the premises and attempted to use pepper spray on the crowd. The incident, which disrupted the voting process, sparked widespread outrage as videos of the assault went viral, showing Koomson being pushed to the ground and her phone forcibly taken before security personnel intervened to rescue her.

The attack on Koomson, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, has drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who described it as a betrayal of Ghana’s democratic values. The violence, which also affected NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, highlights ongoing tensions in the Ablekuma North constituency, where the rerun was ordered to resolve disputes from the 2024 parliamentary elections. The Ghana Police Service has since deployed additional personnel to restore order, but the incident has raised concerns about electoral security and the safety of political figures during such processes.

In response to the assault, Koomson issued a statement confirming the attack and noting that her phone was confiscated, urging the public to disregard any unauthorized communications from her accounts. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, with some, like NDC’s Rashid Tanko-Computer, criticizing Koomson’s conduct as provocative, while others, including netizens, condemned the violence as unacceptable.
