Known fondly as Matron Rose among colleagues and patients alike, Mrs. Amankwaah’s career trajectory intertwines with her athletic pursuits, initially balancing her nursing duties with rigorous athletics training, a testament to her unwavering commitment and determination. Over the years, she has graced numerous major competitions, including the Africa Games, Commonwealth Games, and Olympics, embodying excellence both on and off the track.

Recognized for her outstanding contributions and regarded as the fastest woman in Africa, Mrs. Amankwaah was awarded the prestigious NHS Silver Medal Award by England’s chief nurse, Dame Ruth May, last year. Arriving in England in 1974 at the age of 22, Mrs. Amankwaah embarked on her nursing journey, starting as a staff nurse and ascending to the esteemed position of theatre matron. Her legacy is not only defined by her athletic achievements but also by her tireless dedication to patient care and service within the NHS, leaving an indelible mark on the healthcare community.

She remarked and recounted her career and expressed delight about her decision to now spend time with family.

I’m happy that I’m going to have some time with my family but I have been in this hospital all my life, so retirement feels like losing something – you’re part of the furniture and all of a sudden you are not going to be,”

But I’m so happy that I have achieved what I want to achieve. She remarked.
