Iker Casillas one of the best goalkeepers in Europe who formerly played for Spain (national team) and Real Madrid (club side) tweeted about being gay arousing interest of many on Twitter.
The tweet Spanish read : “I hope you respect me: I’m gay,” and his former Spain team-mate Carles Puyol replied: “It’s time to tell our story.”
The tweet stayed on Twitter for more than an hour before being deleted.
The former Spain/Real Madrid later tweeted: “Hacked account. Luckily everything in order. Apologies to all my followers.”
“Of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.” He added.
Meanwhile, Spanish publication AS claimed Casillas’ post was written as a joke to stop the tabloids from writing and spreading rumours about his personal life.
Puyol his former team mate also tweeted by apologizing to the LGBTQIA+ community: “I have made a mistake. Sorry for a clumsy joke with no bad intentions and totally out of place. All my respect and support for the LGTBIQA+ community.”
Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo, who came out last October, slammed Casillas and Puyol for joking about coming out, this was before deletion of Casillas’ initial tweet
“Joking and making fun out of coming out in football is disappointing,” Cavallo tweeted.
“It’s a difficult journey that any LGBTQ+ people have to go through. To see my role models and legends of the game make fun out of coming out and my community is beyond disrespectful.”
