Meta (META.O), which saw its shares decline by 1.2% in afternoon trading, remained unresponsive to inquiries regarding the technical issue that led to disruptions across its platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Facebook and Instagram, both owned by Meta, resumed normal operations on Tuesday following a more than two-hour outage caused by a technical glitch, affecting numerous users worldwide.
The disruption began around 10 am ET (1500 GMT), with users reporting being logged out of Facebook and Instagram on alternative platforms such as X, unable to regain access.
The White House National Security Council stated it was monitoring the situation and reported no specific indications of malicious cyber activity at the time.
Meta’s status dashboard indicated issues with the WhatsApp Business application programming interface, although the outage for WhatsApp and Threads appeared to be relatively minor, as reported by Downdetector, a service tracking outages based on user reports.
Multiple Meta employees shared on the anonymous messaging app Blind that they encountered difficulties accessing internal work systems during the outage, leading to speculation about potential layoffs.
