In a recent development concerning the case of the late Ahmed Suale, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, shed light on the absence of tangible progress in the investigation.
As per Dame’s clarification, his office has not received any dossier or actionable information pertaining to the murder of the investigative journalist. This revelation underscores the stagnant state of the legal proceedings surrounding Suale’s tragic demise.
Despite ongoing investigations, Dame highlighted that the authorities have yet to compile a prosecutable dossier or initiate substantial legal action in connection with Ahmed Suale’s murder.
Initially, four individuals were apprehended to aid in the inquiry, yet they were subsequently released on police enquiry bail. The decision came after eyewitnesses failed to positively identify the suspects, further complicating the investigation process.
Ahmed Suale met a grim fate on January 16, 2019, when two unidentified assailants, riding a motorcycle with obscured license plates, ambushed him in Madina. The journalist was returning from a family gathering when the perpetrators carried out the fatal attack.
The lack of progress in identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators has left Suale’s family, colleagues, and the broader community grappling with unanswered questions and unresolved grief.
During a recent parliamentary session, the Minister reiterated that Ahmed Suale’s murder is one among several pending cases that await resolution. The acknowledgment underscores the broader issue of impunity for crimes against journalists and the persistent challenges facing the pursuit of justice in such cases.
Several cases are pending in court and I will begin with the murder of Ahmed Suale. It is worthy to know that it is a matter being investigated by the criminal investigations department of the Ghana Police Service. No docket or document fit for prosecution has been built and presented to my office since the murder.
On being appointed Attorney General, the former inspector of police [James] Oppong-Boanuh paid a courtesy call on me on March 29, 2021, for being concerned about the failure to resolve this case and other cases.
I inquired about the state of investigations into the matter and demanded a report on the case and the director general of CID obliged.”
As the investigation continues, stakeholders advocate for enhanced efforts to uncover the truth and hold the perpetrators accountable, seeking closure for Suale’s family and justice for his untimely demise.
